Doanh Chau is not trying to build another app that waits for Africans to get sick. Through MED21, his vision is to transform healthcare through prevention, early detection and responsible technology — a model designed to identify risk earlier and put the patient at the centre, starting in Ghana, with ambitions that reach across the continent.
Across Africa, a lot of healthcare still happens in reverse. Records live in different places depending on where someone was last treated. Preventive care exists in theory but is hard to reach in practice. By the time many conditions are caught, they've already become serious. MED21 starts from that gap, not from a product idea looking for a market.
Prevention, not just treatment
Most healthcare systems are built to answer one question well: what disease does this patient have, right now, in front of us? MED21 is built around a different question, asked earlier and asked continuously — what is changing in this person's health, and can we act before it becomes a serious problem?
That shift, from reacting to a diagnosis to watching for risk, is the whole premise. It moves healthcare from a system that waits for people to get sick to one that actively looks for warning signs while there's still time to do something about them.
Ghana first, then Kenya and beyond
MED21's program is set to begin in Ghana — the first step in a wider plan, not the plan itself. Ghana becomes the place where patients, healthcare professionals, health information and preventive care come together inside one connected system, worked out in practice before it goes anywhere else.
From there, the plan is to expand into other African countries, including Kenya, rather than stay confined to a single market. The long-term ambition is bigger than any one country: a scalable healthcare infrastructure that can adapt to different countries' realities while holding onto the same core principles as it grows.
That ordering matters. Africa isn't simply the market MED21 is launching into — it's part of the reason the model looks the way it does. Healthcare systems here have a real opportunity to build something more preventive and connected from where they are now, rather than spend years digitising the same fragmented processes other systems eventually had to unwind.
Human + AI + Compassion
That combination is how Chau describes MED21's core philosophy, and the ordering is deliberate. AI isn't there to replace doctors — it's there to help organise medical information, surface patterns, and flag potential risks earlier, so healthcare professionals are working with better information, not less involvement.
This lines up with where a lot of serious thinking on AI in healthcare has landed: the technology works best supporting human-centred, compassionate care, not standing in for it. The human part of MED21 doesn't go away. Doctors still provide the clinical judgment no system can replace, and patients stay at the centre of their own healthcare journey rather than being routed around by the tools built to help them.
A record that follows the patient
One of the more understated ideas in MED21 is patient ownership of health information — a person's medical history staying with them and building into a fuller picture over time, rather than resetting every time they see a different provider.
That continuity is what makes prevention possible in the first place. A single consultation can only ever show a snapshot. Watching for change over time is what lets a system notice something worth acting on before it turns into an emergency.
